I am a proud Canadian with a Czech heritage! I like to say that when the Czechs are playing hockey, I route for them, but when the Czechs are playing Canada, my vote definitely goes for Canada to win! I am grateful to Canada which accepted me as a refugee after escaping the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. I am proud to be a Canadian and I am proud of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms! Although I believe that sometimes governments do what's easier and best for their own political future rather than the right thing. Decentralizing power to the provinces is a good thing but especially when human rights are concerned, I've always believed that the Federal Government and Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms should have total jurisdiction. As President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said about democracy: "Our ideals of freedom, democracy, human dignity and social justice shine through all our institutions.", "We must steadily maintain critical self-examination" and "The nation's future is what you make it." The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives Justices "the opportunity to think deeply about particular issues in the light of larger questions" and that is what I believe interpreting our laws should be about. A good Canadian reference is: Weinrib, Lorraine E. "This New Democracy based on constitutionalism and individual human rights.": Justice Iacobucci and Canada's Rights Revolution University of Toronto Law Journal - Volume 57, Number 2, Spring 2007, pp. 399-413. I love the Canadian flag. If you look at the Maple Leaf in our flag closely you'll see on the left and right, two faces with long noses and the heads butted against one another. One face is the Tories (Conservatives) and the other face is the Grits (Liberals). I guess they have long noses because they are politicians lying like Pinnochio! Just kidding! :-) On a more serious note, I know that our politicians try their best. They have a very hard job, especially the Prime Minister and leaders of the opposition parties. There's an old saying: There are many routes to succcess but the sure route to failure is trying to please everyone. Some of the unpopular decisions to make are the ones that are best for the country. A political leader has to have a vision for the country.

Now to lighten our thoughts and hearts, see my verse about Canada, my biography and my favourite books. That's me above standing in front of an Italian Palace from the 1700's near Prague, Czech Republic. There were beautiful mazes of hedges. More beautiful pictures from the Czech Republic and my trips to the lavish tropics as well as the inspiring Rosslyn Chapel from my tour of Scotland can be found as links on my personal web page
